Yoga Props: The Basics for Beginners
What are these things called yoga props, and what do you do with them anyway? From mats, to straps, to blocks and blankets, yoga props can help support, deepen and bring comfort to your poses and practice. More support and comfort in asanas can lead to greater mobility, energy and the ability to relax and release. Here are some basic essentials you can use during your yoga practice:
Yoga Mats: This is a must have, as you begin your yoga practice. A yoga mat will give you support and stability as you move from pose to pose. Also known as a 'sticky mat', the sticky texture is what keeps hands and feet firmly in place. Yoga mats come in an array of materials, thickness, and quality offering the practitioner support and cushion between the body and the floor. For more information on which type of mat is best suited for you and also how to care for your mat, ask any of our knowledgeable teachers who may guide you in making your purchase.
The Block: The yoga block is a tool used by both beginners and advanced students for support and alignment. This prop encourages students to extend and open more fully in poses. The block may be used in many poses during standing and seated practice. Yoga Strap: Straps can be used to deepen poses and to create space in the body while providing connection. They are perfect tools for those less flexible students.
Bolster: Used mostly in restorative yoga, bolsters support the body allowing for total relaxation.
Blanket: Blankets may be used to provide support, cushioning and warmth. Use a blanket under the head or knees in Savasana, as a support in restorative poses and for warmth in corpse pose (final relaxation/Savasana).
Eye Pillows: Eye pillows may help relax the muscles around the eyes, thus quieting the brain leading to a deeper sense of relaxation. Eye pillows block out light and can provide a cool weight to eyes, forehead and sinuses helping some people relax easier and faster. You may purchase eye pillows at the studio; they are hand made with silk brocade and filled with organic lavender, organic flax and essential oils.
