Significance of ‘OM’

Om is central to Hinduism and represents Brahman, the impersonal Absolute of Hinduism. Om represents both the unmanifest and manifest aspects of God. It is a sign of life running through our breath. Om is used in daily Hindu life. The Hindus begin their day, work or a journey by uttering Om. The sacred symbol is often found at the head of letters, at the beginning of examination papers, in every Hindu temple or on family shrines. When we chant Om, we recreate the vibration that was felt when this world was created. That is why we begin and end our practices in a unison om – to better connect ourselves to each other and the world around us.

  • The Power of Chanting Om:
  • The chanting of Om drives away all worldly thoughts and removes distraction and infuses new vigour in the body.
  • The chanting of Om is a powerful tonic. When you chant Om, you feel you are the pure, all pervading light and consciousness.
  • The rhythmic pronunciation of Om allows the mind to relax, become serene and pointed, and infuses the spiritual qualifications which ensure self-realization.
